Background

The original inhabitants of the area were the Creek Indians and they held lands until treaties in the early 1800s brought an influx of settlers from the Carolinas and Georgia. In 1866, the Alabama Legislature created Bullock County from portions of Pike, Macon, Barbour and Montgomery counties. The county is home to the oldest public garden in the United States.

Union Springs was incorporated by the state legislature in 1844.  The town is known as "the Bird Dog Field Trial Capital of the World" and hosts amateur field trials in February. Today, Bullock County offers the opportunities to explore Alabama's history from the early Indians to the present. Historic sites, beautiful old homes and commercial buildings are proudly preserved. Downtown Union Springs lists 47 buildings on the National Historic Register.
