from Union Springs High. I use to hang with Ethel Oliver, Rosa

Comments: During my years at Auburn, in the 1960s, my fraternity's
housemother was Mrs. Ruby Cameron of Union Springs. She was a fine
and caring woman who kept us rowdy boys straight and polite, which
wasn't easy as there were about 85 of us. I visited Union Springs
several times, to collect "Miz" Cameron for her return to Auburn or
to take her home for a holiday. Hopefully, some of her family is
still there.
I hope to stop by Union Springs in a few days (today is 10/26/05),
after a trip to Atlanta and Gadsden. I am looking for a place for my
wife and myself to settle down, away from the yankees and taxes that
have taken over my home here in Florida. Am looking from Huntsville
to Enterprise and all points in between. I like to hunt, shoot and
mind my own business.

Comments: Jacqueline, thank you for helping me to
stop and remember a giant of a man. I owe more to Mr. Calloway than
any other man, living or dead.
It was he who turned me on to math, and how to
study. He and I never talked about my future, but his shaping of how
I see things has made a difference. So, thanks again. I am going to
go and read your post of July 14th again for the fourth time!
The classmate's list provided by Ruby Howard
Thurmond has all the names I remember except Melvin Williams.
I graduated in 1961; therefore you would not have
known me. I was not a very out-going person, though I was captain of
the football team for three years.
The only ones on staff I remember are Mr. Calloway and Mr. Huffman
my football coach.
I did attend "old Carver on the hill" before the new school opened.
I remember mopping the wood floors with old motor oil. I remember
the potbelly stove getting cherry red in winter.
I remember the red clay basketball courts on the side of the school.
I remember girl's basketball when some girls could not go pass half
court. I remember the walks home to "New Town" (a great distance)
from school.
As to what I have been up to, I ran a very successful campaign for
school board last year. Our district has a 5-member school board, 29
schools, 33,000 students and a yearly budget of more than 200
million dollars. If you go to my web-site www.fredyoungblood.com you

Comments: Cecil, your comment of Sunday, July 24th
sparked some interesting events. As soon as I read it, I phoned from
Houston, Texas to Jackie Clark Elzie, in Union Springs. And we
haven't talked in years because there had never been a need--that is
until your comment.
Oh! By the way, I had never spoken to Curtis Elzie in my life--never
even met the man until that day.
Now, for an accurate disclosure of our conversation--no need for a
party line either because this is exactly what we had to say to each
other: "Hello." "Hello, may I speak to Jackie?" "Yes, one moment."
Thus was the beginning and ending of our 'courtship'. But there is
more!
Jackie and I had to talk about everything and everyone under the sun
before we got to your comment. Neither she nor I knew you, nor could
we remember the White family even though Jackie lived in The Grove.
Then we talked about how she and Curtis met, courted and married,
and where he had grown up. I mentioned that my mother had relatives
from areas around Guerryton, Enon, and Hurtsborro. That prompted
Jackie to ask my mother's maiden name.
When I responded that it was Banks, she then said that Curtis was
related to a family named Banks. It was at that point that I told
her that in my youth mom had said she was related to some Elzies.
Jackie then said that Curtis' cousin is Judy Banks, to which I
replied that she was also my distant cousin. What a discovery!
So, you see, Cecil, it has worked out well for all concerned. I have
benefited by (1) getting to know you, (2) catching up on old times
with Jackie, and (3) finding a cousin that I have never kissed.
Honestly, I have had a great time of this--at your expense, and I've
found another source of information that I may tap for future
comments.
So, Cecil, until next time--and there will be a next time, count on
it! You owe me big time and I plan to cash in on it for comments to
add to the web site.

Comments: In addition to the Matt and Mollie Scott
Calhoun family of Union Springs, Bullock County, AL, I am also
researching the JANUARY JACKSON family.
Excerpts from the 1990 'HISTORY OF THE JACKSON FAMILY'
January Owens Jackson was sold from Mississippi to slaveowner Owens
near Orion, AL. At this time, he married Lydia Owens; and two
children were born. His second trade or purchase was to a Jackson
around Pike Road, AL. At this time, he married Arinah Allen; who
owened two girls (Julia and Emma Allen. This wife was sold from
Virginia as a slave. To this union ten children were born.
Myles Owens Sanders Calhoun Jackson was sold four times as a slave
from Georgia to Alabama around the Cornerstone Community. He was
sold from his first family in Georgia to a Calhoun in Alabama. His
second wife, Eliza Murry, was sold from North Carolina to Alabama at
the age of eight years old. To this union twelve children were born.
In March 1925, Myles and Eliza Jackson migrated to Los Angeles, CA.
On October 18, 1925, Eliza Jackson passed away. On October 7, 1926,
Myles Jackson passed away. The two were buried in Los Angeles, CA.
Arinah Jackson was buried in the cemetery located near where Murry
School once stood. January Jackson was buried in Crowes Cemetery
with the other members of the family in Fitzpatrick, AL.
My questions are:
1. Does either of these families sound familiar
with you?
2. What is the name of the cemetery where Murry School once
stood? What condition is it in?
3. Does Crowes Cemetery still exist? What condition is it in?

Comments: I found this wonderful site last year and was just elated
to have done so. I had great expectations of how I would be reunited
with old childhood friends, but to my dismay, it didn't happen. So I
decided to give this site a rest for a while and see what happens.
And today I decided I'll try again after about six months. And to my
surprise, I found that many of those using this site are people I
know.
Curtis Rayborn used to date my sister and I also worked for him
when he was chief of Tuskegee University campus police back in 1987.
I was the classmates of his sister, Mary Ann and his brother, Larry.
The last time I saw Curtis, we were both in Elsalvadore, CA. I also
as a little boy back in the days of the party lines, would listen in
on Jacquelyn Dervin and Curtis Elzie as they courted over the phone.
There were others that I would like to mention but, I have to
mention this person before I use too much space in just one entry.
The person is Linda White Cadogan, I have always wondered what
happened to her. I knew she was in New York some place but, I didn't
know the city until now, I even have a sister in her fair city. I
would like to hear from the people that I mentioned along with
members of the class of 1973.

Comments: "AIR BOBBY" (Part III) On Friday, June 24, 2005, Sco
Nance informed me that Bobby Cobb had passed. It hurt me deeply and
it made me realize how many others of the "little kids" that have
disappeared and I never told them how richly they had contributed to
the quality of my life. (Frank Jackson had the same affect on me,
but that is another story that I'll tell on another day. Today, my
attention is focused on my 'baby brother', Bobby.)
Well, Bobby, I didn't tell you how your antics irritatingly
delighted others and me too. However, I am eternally grateful that
his web site has provided me the opportunity to tell a small portion
of the world about a wonderful "little kid" that brought rays of
sunshine into our lives with his playful devilment.
Bobby, you will be long missed, and forever remembered. The reason?
God took note of your childish pranks, but he did not hold them
against you; after all, did he not have it written: "Foolishness is
bound in the heart of a child...?"
So, Bobby, rest now in his loving care and in our loving memories.
You will always be a special "little kid" and "Air Bobby" to me.

Comments: "AIR BOBBY" (Part II) It was a common
occurrence at Carver High for some guys to jump and tap the light
fixture in the hallway--common that is until one day Bobby Cobb
decided to take a shot at it. Now Bobby was not as tall as most of
the guys who could just jump and touch the fixture with the greatest
of ease. So Bobby must have figured that he needed full court
advantage in order to reach his desired goal.
And full court advantage is what Bobby took. Out of nowhere Bobby
zoomed pass me in the hallway and took a flying leap. (The next time
I saw that leap, Michael "Air" Jordan made it; and truth be told, he
could have taken some pointers from Bobby Cobb!)
Well, needlessly to say, down came Bobby, right on his feet and as
agile as an experienced tomcat. And following him in a downward
spiral was the light fixture. I saw it all! But it happened so
quickly that for a second I did not believe what I had just seen.
However, the broken shards of glass surrounding Bobby proved my
eyesight very much reliable.
We were all astonished at what Bobby had pulled off. And he had done
it in a style never done before or, to my knowledge, ever repeated.
Professor Carl L. Calloway profusely expressed his displeasure for
weeks afterwards. We knew that Professor Calloway was relieved that
Bobby would be okay, yet at the same time it irked him to no end for
anyone to have damaged his beloved Carver High. (Part III is
forthcoming)

Comments: "AIR BOBBY" (Part I) Bobby was one of the
"little kids". That is how most of us at Carver High School referred
to anyone at least one grade behind us in school. It was never a
derogatory phrase--far from it. It just meant that the person was
younger and was generally regarded much the same way you regarded
your pesky little sister or brother, whom you secretly adored.
As I said, Bobby was one of the "little kids". And being at least
two years older and female, true to his nature, Bobby knew just how
to get me going. Being serious by nature, all Bobby Cobb had to do
was pass by me in the school hallways and wink his eye at me to
start me grinning. Other times, just to ruffle my feathers, he'd
pass by and give my books a slight shove, just to throw me off
balance. But the one he pulled most often was to interfere in
conversations between me, Shirley Hazzard, and Annie Bell McCoy;
just enough devilment to make us say, "Will you go on, Bobby Cobb!"
However, the most daring thing Bobby Cobb did surprised us all. The
tall boys at school had a habit of taking a short leap to touch the
light fixture in the main hall near Principal White's office. They
would take a shot at it very much like the short jump shots of
basketball players. (Stay tuned for parts two and three)

Comments: The only thing better than reviewing this
site is to visit with someone from Union Springs. Well, a few
weekends ago, my husband, Gerald, our eight-year-old granddaughter,
Tiffany, and I did just that.
Earlier this month, we received an announcement that Curtis and
Gloria Rayborn would be vacationing in Galveston with three of their
grandchildren, Shakana, Africa, and Joshua.
Since we were only about eighty miles away, off we headed to meet up
with them. It was non stop conversation from the moment we arrived
at their luxurious condominium, which overlooked miles of the Gulf
of Mexico.
And whom did we not talk about? Frank Jackson, Augusta Bush, Buck
and Tuck, Sco Nance, Susie Goodwin, Young Cody, Smokey Rayborn,
Richetta O'Shay Rayborn; who attended elementary school with our
daughter Andrea Nicole Artis. Curtis Glenn Dennis, Frisco, Louise
and "Pee Wee" Fitzpatrick, Frank Phillips, Gwendolyn Williams,
Nadine and Lloyd Ivey, our beloved and departed Rose Cooks, Billy
Rayborn, Gat Crowley, Miss Trudy B. Thomas; mother of Ronald Solomon
Thomas, my classmate. Mr. James A. Grady's shoe shop, where Curtis
worked as a teen.
Then we reminisced about Mrs. Russell, Mr. Henry, Mrs. Jessie
Lattimore, Lumpy, and everybody else that lived on Seale Street.
Jimmy and James Carter and their parents. Doris McGowan and her
husband living in Tuskegee, Chunky and his untimely death some years
ago, George Davie, Robert "Man" Owens and my brothers, Joe and
George, and my baby sister, Blookie.
It was all positive conversation about childhood memories and what
we lived through and how we did it in Union Springs.
Our mates, Gerald and Gloria, were by no means left out of those
"free-for-all" conversations. Even though they were not born in
Union Springs, they have come to love our hometown as much as Curtis
and I.
He and I also discovered that Mrs. Bandy, the midwife, delivered him
and she was scheduled to deliver me as well. But I was a fast little
girl, so my paternal Grandma Lula Dervin performed the honor and
even tied my cute little belly button, I'm an 'innie'. And all Mrs.
Bandy had to do was the paper work on me when she arrived.
Anyway, "thanks" will never be sufficient for the visit with Curtis
and Gloria, but I'll say it anyway, "Thanks." Gloria and I became
friends instantly with promises to call and write.
Shakana, Africa, Joshua, and Tiffany became instant friends and
'water babies', as well. Much to Gloria's and my delight, the
grandfathers took on the responsibilities of lifeguards as the
children swam. And later, Curtis donned the chef's apron and
prepared hot dogs and hamburgers for the tribe, while Gloria and I
leisurely chatted away.
I had to drag Tiffany and Gerald away screaming, as it were, while
Gloria extended generous invitations of, 'you might as well spend
the night and drive in tomorrow, there is plenty of room.'
I had to decline, and we finally arrived home well after midnight
with full stomachs and happy memories--thanks to the Curtis
Rayborns. We are still basking in the glory of having been in
company with them. It was better than a visit home.

Comments: SAN ANTONIO SPURS vs. THE DETROIT PISTONS.
The game was really on last night. I am a Spurs fan and the
'love-of-my-life' of course, has to be for Michigan. And to add
insult to injury, Sco Nance, Unions Springs' homeboy and sports
writer for USA Today, tells me that Detroit will probably win this
one.
'No! Way!' says I, 'Just no way!' My guys, Horry and Ginobili just
were not going to let me down!
With just two minuets and fifteen seconds left to play and the score
is 87 to 86 in favor of Detroit, I e-mailed Sco saying, "My chant
right now is, "Please! Don't let Sco be right! Just don't let Sco be
right!"
Bright and early the next morning, Sco e-mails me: "If I were the
kind of person who says I told you so, I would say, I told you so.
But I'm not the kind of person who says, I told you so. So, I'm not
going to say, I told you so. But as Union Springs' fabled
philosopher, Walwyn Bell used to say, "If I tell you a mosquito can
pull a plow--hitch him up and hold the line!"
All this Houstonian can say to that is, "Giddy-yap mosquito."

Comments: Hi Jackie, All is well. I stay so busy
that I may get on-line once during a week. I am so busy with getting
my gospel messages together that sometimes I don't get to correspond
with friends and family as much as I would like.
I became very active in the ministry five years ago and I speak at
some function at least twice a month--in fact, I will be speaking in
Union Springs at Lowfield Baptist Church during the month of
September. (It will be for the Women's Day program--so, everyone is
invited and your presence will be warmly welcomed. I am including my
phone number--just in case you want to give me a call (773)
233-5915.
I know you always wanted to to know who some of my Carver High
School classmates were, so here goes with a few names from the
graduating class of 1961: Lizzette Hardly, Mattie Jackson, Cora,
Jackson, Bernice Coleman, Ethel Patterson, Roscoe Phillips, Dorothy
Jackson, Celestine Bandy, Otis Sanders, Jacqueline Foreman, Willie
Dean Kaiser, and Fred Youngblood. (That is all I can recall at the
moment maybe some of my other classmates will see the site and fill
in any missing names.)
Some of the music we listened to during our senior year was: Theme
from a Summer Place by Percy Faith; Chain Gang, by Sam Cooke; He
Will Have to go was sang by Jim Reeve; Puppy Love, by Paul Anka;
Last Night, by the Bar Kays; Elvis sang Surrender; and who does not
remember Ernie K Doe's tune, Mother-in-Law? One of the movies any
family could enjoy, at that time, was Hayley Mills, Maureen O'Hara,
and Brian Keith (Uncle Bill from Family Affair) who starred in "The
Parent Trap".
Well, this has been a wonderful trip back down memory lane. I hope
that all continues well with you and your family.
Until next time, love, - Ruby M. Howard Thurmond

shout out, to the Goodwin, Lee, Feagin and Underwood families from

remember that big hog, he use to have sitting there to the entrance
to his place. Hadn't been back since the 70's; until me and my

those past visits.
Can someone tell me about the history of the Sardis Baptist Church
out on hwy 223; if I'm not mistaken on the location? But could be
wrong. Have a lot of family members buried out there. I believe
family members called it Old Sardis and I believe there was a Young

Comments: LIVING IN THE GROVE
Living there in The Grove, I was acquainted with people like the
Thomas family, who lived directly across the street on Chunnenuggee
Avenue. The older men of the family were Pete and Wiley; who were
indistinguishable from Caucasians.
My grandmother, Mrs. Lucy Harris, lived on Ellis Street, next to the
Ice Cream Plant and across from the Ice Plant. Annie Will, Betty
Jean, Roger, and Bay (Eugene) Austin lived next door to Aunt Sarah.
Their mother, Alga Mae, was my aunt's cousin. I lived with Aunt
Sarah during the second half of my senior year. (I graduated from
Carver High School in 1959; formerly I had been attending Spencer
High School in Columbus, Georgia.)
During that time while attending Carver High School, I went to
school with Susie and Robert Walker. I knew Fred Brown-Gosha (who
attended Merritt High School in Midway), Willie Clarence Swanson, my
cousin, and Buford Cox, who was a life-long friend.
I have known Jackie Clark (Elzie) and her sisters all of my life.
(Their father--whose name I think was Lennon--attended school with
my mother, Bertha Harris.) And every Saturday, Jackie and her
sisters would go to a little two-room house across the tracks from
The Grove so that my other aunt, Aunt Lela Will, could do their hair
for Sunday church.
My parents, Frank and Bertha Harris, were born in Bullock and Macon
County, my mother being from Tuskegee and my father from the Union
Springs area.
Although I only lived in Union Springs for a total of six months,
and although I have lived most of my life in other major cities--my
roots are in Union Springs.

Comments: Jacqueline, it was great hearing from you. It brought
back some old beautiful memories from our childhood. You wanted to
know about my most memorable event of Union Springs. Now...the Mary
Sue story...
THE MARK of the LOVE BIT BOY
We were in the 7th grade, the teacher told us to pick the seats that
we wanted to sit in because after that day, that would be our
permanent seat. Although I was twelve, I chose the seat behind the
love of my life, Mary Sue Nance.
During that day the teacher called me from my seat and had me do
something--I don't remember what it was--but the teacher left the
classroom and another boy took my seat behind Mary Sue and refused
to move.
Somehow we started to fight and when he realized that he could not
beat me, he did the only thing that he felt he could do.
So from that day to the present time, I wear the love mark of Mary
Sue Nance on my chest because that boy--whatever his name was, bit
me while we were fighting.

Comments: MATT and MOLLIE (SCOTT) CALHOUN FAMILY
Our African American ancestors, Matt Calhoun and Mollie Scott,
entered into holy matrimony on November 5, 1891, in Union Springs,
Bullock County, Alabama. Matt's parents were David and Frances
(Howard) Calhoun. Mollie's parents were James and Nancy (?) Scott.
Matt and Mollie were blessed with 12 children: David, Joseph,
Arwilder Frances, John Wesley, Annie Will, Mattie, Cleo, Susie,
Essie Ophelia, Nancy Jane and Jessie. With the passing of Annie
Will in 1996, both generations are now deceased. With their first
grandchild Eugene being born in 1913, Matt and Mollie had a total of
45 grandchildren . . . 15 of whom survive today. We are not certain
of the date or place of death for Mollie. All we know is that she
died between 1916 and 1920. It is believed that Cleo and Ophelia
were youths when they died.
In 1920, Matt was enumerated on the Census in Birmingham, AL with
his new wife Bessie (Tolliver) Calhoun and his daughter Susie. All
of the other living children migrated to West Virginia where the men
found work in the coal mines and the women married men who worked
the mines.
Matt and Bessie were not found on the 1930 Census. Matt died
January 29, 1934, in Birmingham. His death certificate states that
he is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. It is not known at this time
what became of Bessie.

Comments: Hi Jackie,
How nice to hear from you! My mother is doing well. She misses
Union Springs, however, and I try to take her for a visit as often
as possible. We were there for a few days during the week after
Easter. I'll have to give some thought to some of your questions but
will be pleased to provide any information that I can.
I graduated from Carver High School in 1960 (I think we were the
first class to graduate from the "new" school). Some of my
classmates: Margaret Buford, Margaret Owens, Dorothy Chappell, Andy
Hicks, Rose Hicks, Ruth Foster, Robert Pickett, Charles Lee,
Charlotte Caldwell (Phillips), Sandy Mac Calhoun, Bennie Braswell,
Eugene Cooks, Ophelia Ray, Walter Tarver, Arthur Mac Ousley, John
Foreman, Tessie Battle, Richard Moultrie, Watt Smith, Moses Sullen,
Mozelle Bentford, Joseph Smith. There are others whose names I
don't recall at the moment but hopefully I will later.
The elementary school that I attended was located on the corner
of Tye Street on the property where St. Luke Baptist Church is now
located. My junior high was located "under the hill" on the grounds
below old Carver where I attended high school. As you are aware,
the Carver High building and grounds were leveled many years ago.
Anyway, just wanted to reply to your message. Good luck with
this project. It's a great idea! Sue

Comments: CARVER BELL--MY HUCKLEBERRY FINN
It's funny that a friend and I were talking about Tom Sawyer and
Huckleberry Finn and later that same friend told me that Carver Bell
had passed. Carver Bell was my Huckleberry Finn. When I came to
Union Springs during my last year at Carver High School in 1959, I
met Carver and his group of "Country Boys". (School was not their
first priority; but they were among the most wonderful people I have
ever met.).
Carver knew everything about everything. He knew about hunting,
fishing, horseback riding, grooming, and the list could to on and
on. He was a natural leader and had the innocence of childhood
coupled with the wisdom of the ages.
When I returned to Union Springs and learned that he had gone to
Florida, I promised myself that I would go visit him someday. Well
promises grow dim, but not my memory nor my memories of Carver Bell.
I find myself wondering if he was as knowledgeable as a grown-up
as when he was an adolescent. One of my fondest memories is
remembering that it was Carver who tried to bolster my courage when
I was shy with girls; especially a particularly overly amorous one
that pursued me. Like Huck Finn, Carver knew everything. He knew
when to pick "may-pops", plums, watermelons, and probably everything
else under the sun. If he were stranded on a desert island, he would
survive.
The world and I lost a real person, friend, mentor, "pioneer"
practical joker, and all the adjectives that describe a person well
liked by everyone. As I said, he was my Huck Finn.

sister, Jackie Artis, emailed a list of Union Springs students who
have passed. That list reminded me of one student who walked with
his feet pointed outward (the dictionary term is "splayfoot"). The
way I remember it, if anyone wanted to start a fight, it was almost
sure to happen if they stepped on his turned out feet. ?
Of course, I could tell a million stories about my best friend,
Tyrone Nance, and one day I'll submit one or two of them. My wife
has heard stories about Tyrone and me ever since we met. So she was
very glad to meet Tyrone on April 25, 1998 when we were in Alabama
for the funeral of my mother, Mary Dervin. We drove from Tuskegee to
Union Springs to see my home town which included a pass by the home
of Tyrone's mother. We stopped when we saw Tyrone in the yard. He
happened to be there for a weekend visit so we stood out by our
rented vehicle just talking and joking for nearly two hours. We
hadn't seen or talked in many years but there wasn't a single
awkward moment. It was only a year or two later that Tyrone
passed....hard to believe, even now.

Comments: DO YOU REMEMBER MISS ALMEDA DAVIE? I never knew
for sure if her first name was spelled Almeda, Alameda, or Almita;
or if her last name was Davie or Davis. But we called her Miss
Almeda. And I do remember that this African American woman lived on
Holcombe Avenue, right across from Old Carver High School.
I DID NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT HER, except that she had a sister named
Susie and a brother whose name now escapes me. Evidently she was a
former educator because of her teaching skills. And many working
mothers during the late 1950s and early 1960s entrusted her to
educate and care for their pre-school children. DAY CARE SYSTEMS IN
THOSE DAYS consisted of people, besides family members, that you
could trust to care for your small children. And if they happened
to have taught your child the alphabets, then all the better.
MISS ALMEDA HAD HER OWN EDUCATION SYSTEM, and it worked! It was
said that by the time her children began pre-school, they were well
ahead of the game; parents and teachers alike praised her in our
community. I NEVER SAW MISS ALMEDA SMILE and her tone of voice with
the children was nothing like the tone of my early educators. My
kindergarten and first grade teachers all had such cooing and
encouraging voices. And I think I can safely say that cooing is the
least sound anyone associated with Miss Almeda. However, whatever
her tone, it worked with her children and they adored her. Wherever
she took her little brood, they were always well mannered and very
obedient; yet they were not in fear of her. In fact, they were
known to cry uncontrollably when they learned they were not to
return to Miss Almeda because they would be attending school the
following year. I DON'T REMEMBER WHEN MISS ALMEDA STOPPED TEACHING,
but I do remember Miss Almeda, even thought she did not teach any of
my siblings or me. However, I am sure that there are many of her
students out there, so would you let the rest of us know what it was
like to have been taught by Miss Almeda?

- TO THE AFRICAN AMERICAN SPOKESPERSON: Your comment about the
African American contribution to Union Springs started me to
thinking about businesses that existed during my childhood. I
REMEMBER WALKING TO TOWN in my black and white Saddle Oxfords to
have my first pair of high heel shoes fitted with rubber tips on
the heel by Mr. James Grady of JAMES GRADY'S SHOE REPAIR. (It
was located in a little nook of a building next door to the
Union Springs Herald.. IT WAS UNDERSTOOD THAT IF DEATH CLAIMED
ANY ONE OF US our body would have gone to the funeral home of
CARTER, POE, or ALLEN. Also, if you needed a ride to Tuskegee or
Montgomery, you could hire their car to take you, and it was
rumored that if you timed your trip in harmony with when they
had to pick up a body, your rate was a little cheaper. JIMMY
CARTER'S RECORD SHOP (on Seale Street) was the place where I
spent the majority of my time the summer I was twelve-years-old.
Jimmy taught me how to really listen to music. He taught me to
not only listen to the music and ever word, but more importantly
to listen to the various instruments and to read the label to
learn the name of the real genius--the writer. AFTER THE SCHOOL
DANCE, CARTER'S NIGHT SPOT was where Dad, yes, my dad, took me
for a burger and soda. MY BEAUTY SHOP was located on Montgomery
Street, at the home of Mrs. Winnie Turner. WHAT HALCYON DAYS. Is
there anyone else that remember those or similar places? If so,
let us hear from you.

DEAR FAMILY AND FRIENDS of DR. "BUCK" BANTON,
Have you ever noticed the way a flower seems bowed down after
weathering a storm? In a way it is a touching sight. After all, the
cloudburst likely sent countless animals and people-far hardier
creations than any flower-scurrying for shelter.
Yet, the flower stood there, rooted, facing the weather's full
fury. Now, here it is intact, bowed but unbroken, showing a strength
that belies its delicate appearance. You may wonder, as you admire
it, if it will regain its vigor and lift its lovely head to the sky
once more. It is much the same with people.
In these troubled times, we face all manner of storms. Economic
hardships, depression, failing health, the loss of a loved one in
death-such tempests assail all of us at one time or another, and
sometimes we can no more avoid them than the flower can uproot
itself and run for cover. It is moving to see individuals who appear
quite frail show surprising strength and endure onslaughts. How do
they do it? Often the key is faith. Jesus Christ's half brother
James wrote: "You know that when your faith succeeds in facing such
trials, the result is the ability to endure.-James 1:3, Today's
English Version.
This knowledge gives hope. And that hope, in turn, gradually
softens grief. It helps you to endure, and more. In time, like the
flower after the storm, you can and will lift your head up from
grief and find joy and fulfillment in life once again.
May faith enable you to endure the loss of Dr. Banton.

What a nice informative site. I am delighted to learn about Union
Springs and its history. My father was born in Union Springs along
with his 4 brothers. I only knew Union Springs as a child (many,
many) years ago and am excited to be able to revisit this area soon.
My husband and I hope to find cousins and their families in the
UnionSpring/Troy area as we drive from Northern Virginia to
Washington State this Spring. Please, if anyone knows relatives of
Albert Van, Terrel Lee, Lenton, Wade and Andrew Ham(m), Wyman,
Nelson or Lou Gary Hamm, I would love to hear from you.

I was born and raised in Union Springs Alabama. This website
gives insight on various monuments and landmarks in Bullock County.
However, there is no mention of the African American Heritage in
Union Springs. This website does not give an honest picture of the
Union Springs history. African Americans made a host of
contributions to Union Springs, without them there would be no Union
Springs. This website disturbs me because Union Springs is a
predominately black city. This website needs a major makeover,
because this is not what Unions Springs is about. African Americans
deserves a large portion of the credit given to this historical
city. My ancestors worked very hard to build the city. They have
never been rewarded for there contributions. I would like to help
redevelop this web page. Please feel free to contact me at the email
address listed above.
Ed. Note: Oops! You didn't look close
enough. Go to Attractions - African American Heritage. We have an
entire section of the web site dedicated to the contributions of
black Americans to Bullock County. In addition, read through the
about us and news sections where you will find countless articles
about today's citizens of all races and their contributions to our
county. In addition, the web site editor is open to suggestions and
contributions from the community.

I'm elated to find this website. I left Union Springs in 1972,
and have lived in and around Rochester, NY since that time. (I have
always considered myself as a member of the BCHS Class of '75) My
mother, fondly known as Baby Do, retired several years ago and moved
back home. I try to get back as often as I can. I will always
consider Union Springs my home. I have many, many good memories
about the place and the people. Thanks for the website & the
"opportunity" to keep in touch with Union Springs.

We visited U.S. last summer after nearly 20 years absence. My
husband's mother was Irene Feagin, who became a judge in Washington,
D.C. Her relatives were Rainers and Blues, among others. We were
lucky to run into Bill Rainer and caught up after many years. Bo
Haynes had just passed and several Feagin cousins had been back to
U.S. a few weeks before for the funeral. We had a large U.S. reunion
here a few months ago when Jerry Feagin's widow turned 90. Uncle
Jerry is buried in U.S. He was in the class of '27 and Judge Scott
was in the class of '28.
Uncle Jerry always referred to U.S. with Cissie Rainer as "The
Hub of the Universe." (Cissie's niece and nephew live here, too, and
we stay in touch.) His mother wrote a book about U.S. in 1964 and it
is full of stories on many of the families whose children and
grandchildren read this website. There is certainly much going on in
U.S. these days and we plan on visiting again (with less time in
between than the next-to-last visit.)

Hi Union springs, what a nice place to grow up in , I love Union
Springs, that is my home town, I have family and love one there. I
visit Union Spring, all the time, I will never forget where I came
from. God has blessed all of us, to leave , the ones that wanted to
leave, and return-we should all think God for favor, his love, and
compassion that he has shown toward us.

I am from Miami, Florida. I came to visit your city about 25
years ago. I fell in love with your city. My husband Daniel Penick
was born in Union Springs. Now that I am about ready to retire, I am
planning to move there. The city is beautiful and the people in
Union Springs are very compassionate, friendly and they make a
person feel at home. I hope to become a part of your community very
soon.

Very impressed with the website. It brings back a lot of good
memories. My family lived in Union Springs for a short time in 1983
& 1984. We worked with the local radio station [WSCA]! Made a lot
friends while there, and think of ya'll often! If anyone has any
info about the station, any former employees, and the Church Of God,
let me know. Thanks and God Bless

Thank you for providing such a web site. It has allowed me to
visit my hometown though I live far away. It has allowed me to renew
old friendships and begin new ones and for those of you who have put
off writing to old friends or making new ones, I dedicate these
words to you: Friendship in this world is like a flower living in a
tin can. It has to deal with the scorching heat and is totally at
the mercy of man. It may not be taken inside and has to deal with
drenching rain, or it may not be watered at all and its cries for
help may be in vain. Its only hope is to be found by someone loving
and kind, someone who will love and nourish it and on it let the sun
shine So here are my flowers of friendship, planted in this tin can.
I hope they make you think of our friendship with loving memories as
you make your plans. So, please plan some time for me, if possible.
It should not cost you a thing but a little time. A note of hello, a
card, or a phone call would do and be just dandy and fine.

This is really a joy for me to find. I really love my home, Union
Springs, Carver High School,1953. I love home so much until I am
trying to gather all natives to unite and invest in our home town.
We are now in the process of building a resort on 30 acres on
Southern Springs Road. We invite everyone to unite and offer what
talents donations or whatever you can so we can together give back
to our home that has given us so much. This is a great opportunity
for all races that were so divided to unite for such a monumental
cause. For more info: call 908-413-4332. I now live in New Jersey
but as we get this project started I will move back home. |
