CommentsComments...Jackie, I'm planning to go to Union Springs for a day, and I will make a point of seeing Rev. A.B. Clark. He is my dad's first cousin, and his health has been failing. I always make a point of seeing him so I can catch him up on family news. I also enjoy hearing him talk about my grandfather and my dad. I will also try to see Mrs. Maurine Mason and her son Dewey. They used to live across the street from us on Locke Avenue before it had a name. They were among the first people we met when we moved to Union Springs in 1950.

CommentsComments...Hi everyone, I was in Alabama in Sept. and found that very little had changed. The Carver High School Class of 1963 is planning a reunion in May, 20007. We are in the process of trying to track down our classmates and teachers. If you are a class member or teacher and no one has contacted you, please e-mail me and I will get information out to you ASAP. Roscoe Nance and Jacquline Dervin Artis have been most helpful.
I was deeply saddden to hear from Roscoe that Mrs. Essie Hobbs had expired. She was very special to me,a great support, my cheerleader when I needed it most. It is because of her encouragement that I became a nurse. I will always be grateful for her support, and for her belief that I could and would make it. Thanks you God for teachers like Mrs. Hobbs.

CommentsComments...Hey, fellow Carver High schoolmates, are you planning on being in Union Springs anytime soon? If so, let the rest of us know who you plan to visit and/or what sites you will make it a point to see when you get there. And for those of us that won't make it home, let us know the same if you were to have gone. For example: If I were going home, I'd visit my Aunt Lizzie Banks and my cousin "Beany" that lives in New Town. Of course I'd drive through my old neighborhood on Holcombe Avenue and I'd especially stop by the spot where "Old Carver" once stood (between Montgomery and Holcombe Avenue). And no visit home would be complete unless I visited Bullock County High School, aka Carver High, home of the Warhawks.

CommentsComments...Jackie, Thanks for the wonderful piece of our history. (Black History, A Life's Work, Seeks Museum, The New York Times) Yes, this was of great interest to me. As a struggling people for many decades, we need to know and learn about people such as Mrs. Clayton. I will cherish this piece of work as well as share it with others. Also, I will make a display along with other pieces of Black artifacts. Thanks again, Madeleine
PS I am going to Union Springs for Christmas. I'm looking forward to the visit. I feel like I am going to a resort every time I visit. I drive around viewing the sights reminiscing with the classical music filling the air with sweet thoughts. There are some changes but it basically looks the same. The town's people are so friendly and warm. A few undesirables have penetrated the area, but for the most part the town is holding it's own. Madeleine Macklin, nee "Mattie" Thomas.

CommentsComments...Hello Union springs, this is just GREAT to have a registry for the people that enjoy "the Springs". I would like to give a shout out to any of my relatives that may read this: Baskins, Ivey, Townsend, Cunningham, McCray and my friends the Baker & Johnson and to those that I might have missed. I visit Union Springs quite often and alot of the time I'm not able to see everyone, but beleive me I do think about you all, it's just when you're on vacation you want to go back and do the things that got you so interested in returning to Union Springs, that you just don't have the time. Some of my people are probably wondering who I am, to most of you in Union Springs I'm known as "SISSAE". My grandparets were Buddy Boy and Martha Ivey, (RIP).I use to visit Alabama in the summer months while growing up. To all Thank You for this!!!

CommentsOn Oct. 30, 2006 I visited Old Union Cemetery and Church on High Ridge Road in Bullock Co., Alabama, near China Grove. To my dismay, the old building had been demolished. Some of the structure was the original building. Does anyone know why it was torn down? I would like to hear any comments. My great-great-grandfather, Brinkley Burks, helped to build the church in 1835 or so. He and my great-great-grandmother, Temperence Evans Burks, are buried in the cemetery there.

CommentsHello,
I have recently discovered that Sterling Foster was the youngest son of my GG grandfather Arthur Foster of Greene County GA. Arthur Foster's will:
In Greene Co. Will Book F, p. 259, is Arthur Foster?s will, written Nov. 3, 1830
It allots:
daughter Sarah E. Foster a negro Phebe
daughter Lucy S. Foster a negro Harriett
daughter Elizabeth H. Foster a negro Carolina
son Moses F. Foster a negro Alexander
son Arthur Foster (JR) $10
granddaughter Emily E. Foster $10 and what I already gave to her father, my son Daniel Foster
grandson Thomas F. Brown $10 and what I already gave to his mother daughter Mary White
son Sterling J. Foster noted as underage
Hannah his wife
Foster requests that his estate be kept intact until Sterling Foster is educated and comes of age, at which time it should be divided by lot among children Sarah E., Nathaniel G., James M., Moses F., Adam, Lucy S., Albert G., Elizabeth H., Sterling J.
Executors of the will were his sons Nathaniel Foster and James M Foster.
Witnesses: Seaborn J. Johnson, George Martin, Woody Jackson.
Recorded March 22, 1841, William L. Strain, clerk.
I certainly intend to visit Union Springs in the very near future and see the Foster Home and perhaps meet some of my distant cousins.

CommentsComments...When I was asked to describe my brother, Carver, I said the first honest thing that came to mind, and that was the fact that he was just a good-natured person.
He had a good personality and I am sure that is why he had so many friends; he never seemed to lack for friendship--people just liked him and he liked people.
Carver had so many friends, but being younger than they, I must say that I don't remember all of them that well by name. He always hung out with older guys, mainly because of our older cousin, Henry Bell. And then there was "Cricket" and "Jackyboy" that was close to Carver. (Again, because I was so much younger than they, I don't recall specific events in their lives--actually, I am happy at this stage of my life that I remembered their names.)
I remember Carver as being happy all the time. Nothing seemed to bother him; neither did he let things worry him a lot. And he always looked for the good in people.
Mother, Louise Bell, was the head of the household of her six children; often working two jobs to support us. Therefore, it was Mama, our loving grandmother, Leola Bell, who proved to be the major disciplinarian for Carver, Walwyn, me (Lula Clara), Jet, Charles, and Patrick.
Yet, Mama knew how to be firm when necessary and at the same time she enjoyed life and worked hard. I can safely say that as children, we were well loved. (Submitted by Jacqueline Dervin Artis for Lula Clara Bell Woodard)

My class had the distinct honor of being the Senior Class of Carver High School during the school year of '58-'59. Mr. E.L. Warren served as principal during that time and I reigned as Miss Carver High.
Among my classmates were: Betty, Norman, and Fred Ivey, Gaston and Gloria Crowley, James Goodwin, Martha Jean (Pruitt), Mildred Broaden, Willie Frank Phillips, Chester Scott, Betty Sykes, Mary Louise Herron, and Q.B. Scott.
I am particularly interested in locating my dear friends and classmates, Annie Ruth Keener and Mary Dean Bean. Also, if anyone remembers the residents of Rumph Hill, let me hear from you by means of this web site.
